Wausau Montessori students learn about fire fighting with Wausau Fire Department

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - The Third through Sixth grade classes from the Wausau Montessori Charter School spent an afternoon at the Wausau Fire Department learning what it takes to be a firefighter.

It was part of National Service Day, and the kids spent the morning helping the fire crews cook lunch, wash down the fire station and the trucks, and paint a new sign for the corner of Grand Avenue and Thomas Street.

Deputy Fire Chief Phil Rentmeester says the event gives the kids a chance to get hands on and learn in a way that helps them retain that knowledge. "We're taking a look at these kids having a good time with the fire hose, and at the same time they're learning about what the duties of a firefighter are."

More importantly, Rentmeester says it's a way to convey the message of fire safety. "All that stuff needs to start young, because children are involved in a fire as well, and they need to know how to behave properly." He says there's a lot of things kids can learn to be safe in a fire. "Whether it's being notified by the smoke alarm, being aware what happens in case of a fire, how to get out of a building, how do you act appropriately when that occurs?"

But most of all the kids had a good time. "It's just plain fun for the kids to be working with the big hoses and learning about the work that happens at the fire department."
