Former Marshfield man to serve jail time for killing dog

by

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAU) -- A man that killed his dog by breaking its neck will spend three months in jail.

That’s not the sentence Wood County Judge Nicholas Brazeau wanted to give 27-year-old Michael Loftus, who used to live in Marshfield. Brazeau said the charge was amended to misdemeanor cruelty to animals, and the sentence should have been a long period of probation. Loftus wouldn’t accept probation, and the mandatory counseling that comes with it.

Loftus has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, and the judge did not want to put him in jail, but had little choice.

Loftus did not remember killing his dog or sending a picture of the dead animal to a family member. The dog was suffering from cancer and had bladder problems. His attorney says Loftus didn’t understand the Humane Society could have helped him euthanize the dog.
