Hanke Leads Pointers To Baseball Sweep

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Clutch RBI hits in both games by junior Cody Hanke helped the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team post a pair of come-from-behind victories on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Eagles of UW-La Crosse.No. 2 UW-Stevens Point 4 – UW-La Crosse 3 (10 inn.)Trailing 2-0 after two and a half innings, the Pointers got on the board when Clint Rosecame home on a Brandon Kranz sacrifice fly.The teams each scored a pair of runs in their respective halves of the fourth, keeping the visiting Eagles in front 3-2.Scoreless until the ninth, Harry Steld poked a one-out offering into right field, scoring ben Gerber and knotting the score at 3-3.In the 10th, Hanke gave the Pointers the victory with his bases-loaded drive down the right field line, bringing home Casey Barnes and giving the Pointers the walk-off victory, 4-3.Starter Zach Wendorf went four innings, allowing three runs, all earned, and struck out three before giving way reliever Luke Watson , who threw six scoreless innings to secure the win. Watson scattered three hits and struck out five.Kranz  was the only Pointer to register multiple hits in the game, also driving in one run.No. 2 UW-Stevens Point 11 – UW-La Crosse 9Behind 3-2 after three, a RBI ground-out by Clint Rose in the fourth scored Taylor Carlson and knotted the score at 3-3.A five-run fifth that included a grand slam by Alex Cordova gave the Eagles the lead again, 8-3.A two-run home run by Hanke in the home half of the fifth cut the Eagles lead to 8-5. A two-out double by Hanke in the sixth helped cap a five-run frame and put the Pointers in front for good, 10-8.Tyler Flood pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the victory after pitching three innings of three-hit ball. Starter Max Frederick went 4.1 innings and Nick Prebleski pitched 1.2 innings in relief.Hanke drove in four runs and Rose three on a pair of hits each.UW-Stevens Point (14-1, 4-0 WIAC) and UW-La Crosse (8-8, 2-2 WIAC) return to the diamond Monday, April 7. First pitch of Monday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m. at University Field.
