Gov. Scott Walker to push for another UW tuition freeze in campaign

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - If he's re-elected in November, Governor Scott Walker says he'll push for another two-year tuition freeze for University of Wisconsin schools.

The Republican Walker said Friday he wants to continue the UW's current freeze in the next two-year budget starting in mid-2015.

Walker said it's justified, after a new report released Thursday shows that the UW System will have a $1.1 billion surplus at the end of the school year.

Lawmakers were caught by surprise a year ago, when they learned that UW campuses built up large reserves while the schools kept raising tuition by 5.5 percent year after year.

Walker mentioned those tuition hikes by saying, "It is important to give our students and their families a break."

He said a second two-year tuition freeze would make college more affordable for students and working families.
