Names released in Wittenberg hostage incident

WITTENBERG, Wis. (WSAU) -- The names of the gunman and the hostage involved in Tuesday’s hostage incident in Wittenberg have been released.

The suspect is 28-year-old Travis W. Keiler from Gillett. The hostage was 26-year-old McDonald’s store manager Jacob J. Kujawa.

Keiler entered the McDonalds and Shell station in Wittenberg just before 2:00 p.m. with a small caliber handgun. Everyone was allowed to leave except Kujawa. Kujawa was released after 3:00 p.m. and Keiler surrendered to law enforcement at about 4:00 p.m.

Sheriff Randy Wright says there is no known relation between the two men, and that Kieler was experiencing symptoms of severe depression. Kieler has some past traffic offenses, but nothing else on his record. He is presently being evaluated at a medical facility.   Sheriff Wright says Kujawa handled the situation extremely well, and remained calm throughout the situation.  Kujawa has not spoken about the incident, and questions are being referred to McDonald's corporate headquarters.

New charges stemming from the hostage incident have not yet been filed.
