POTOSI, WI (WTAQ) - The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is investigation the drowning of an Iowa man in the Mississippi River near Potosi.
53-year-old Jerry S. Thill of Dubuque had reportedly been camping with four other men on an island on the Wisconsin side of the river. That island is located across the river from Finley’s Landing Park in Iowa.
Authorities say Thill had gone into the river, according to witnesses, “to check (to see) why the fishing was so bad.”
The other 4 men were also from Dubuque. They told deputies Thill was in water up to his chest and appeared to be fine when he suddenly start looking distressed and tried to swim.
23-year-old Steven C. Kruckenberg says he swam out to the older man, but wasn’t able to maintain a strong hold on him. Thill went under and didn’t come back up.
An Iowa Department of Natural Resources boat used sonar to locate the body.
