Natural Resources Board okays crossbow deer hunt for everyone

HAYWARD, WI (WTAQ) - For the first time, Wisconsin hunters who are not elderly or disabled can use crossbows to shoot deer.

The state Natural Resources Board, meeting in Hayward Wednesday morning, approved a new crossbow season to run at the same time as the bow and arrow deer season.

Both will run from mid-September until either late November or the first part of December, depending on the calendar for each year.

Licensed hunters of all ages and physical abilities can start using crossbows not just for deer -- but smaller animals like coyotes and rabbits.

The governor and Legislature approved a crossbow season earlier this year, despite concerns from bow hunters that it would taint their sport.

Also Wednesday, new waterfowl seasons were approved by the DNR Board. Among other things, duck hunting will be split into three zones which each have their own 60-day seasons.
