Charges filed against cop attacker

PLOVER, Wis. (WSAU) -- Charges have been filed against the man who allegedly attacked a Plover police officer with a knife during a traffic stop last weekend.

33-year-old Brett Lieberman of Manawa is hospitalized with gunshot wounds after attacking Officer Andy Hopfensperger on Highway 54 between Plover Road and Maple Drive Friday night. Hopfensperger was not injured. He is on administrative leave while the state Department of Corrections investigates the case.

District Attorney Louis Molepske Jr. filed a charge of attempted 1st degree homicide against Lieberman. Judge Thomas Eagan issued a warrant for his arrest, although Lieberman is currently still hospitalized.

No new court dates have been set, and will likely not be scheduled until Lieberman is out of the hospital.
