Kwik Trip seeks Oneida County Highway Department land

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WXPR) --  A convenience store chain would like to put up a new store in Rhinelander on the site of the Oneida County Highway Department's shops.

Two Oneida county board committees have recommended to the full county board acceptance of an offer by the investment firm for Kwik-Trip to purchase the Oneida County Highway Department grounds and 14 acres on Rhinelander's west side. The committees met in closed session to discuss the Kwik Trip offer and no dollar amount was released.

The county would build a new Highway Department on 35 county-owned acres off the Highway 8 byass on Rhinelander's south side . The southern end is bounded by Lake Julia Road. That property was once a shooting range and radio tower, but is now unused. Kwik Trip is soon to open a new store near Walmart on Rhinelander's east side. The west side property would have a second Rhinelander Kwik Trip store and possibly other businesses.

Information at the meeting indicated the county shops face a number of costly repair issues, possibly as high as $4 million. The approximate cost to build a new facility would be as low at $6.5 million to $14 million. The cost would be offset in part by the Kwik Trip offer.

County Board Chair David Hintz says the numbers are still being negotiated but are a solid starting point. “A lot of hard work went into this package to this date. Some of the numbers are soft, but they're as good a numbers as we have at this point."

The county board meets in regular session August 19, but is likely to meet again in special session August 21 to discuss the Kwik Trip offer.
