Taxpayers Warned About Scam Phone Calls

UNDATED (WHTC) -- Taxpayers are being warned about a phone fraud scam.  The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration says there have been reports of phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the IRS.  Your first clue that a call from the IRS is a scam: asking for payment with a pre-paid debit card or a wire transfer.  The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.  The normal procedure of the IRS is to contact taxpayers about unpaid taxes through the mail.  The scariest thing is that the caller will usually have the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security number.  If you get a call that you think is a scam, hang up and the call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
