Assemblyman Bob Kulp calls Medicaid question on Wood County fall ballot a political move

STRATFORD, WI (WSAU) -- Voters in Wood County will have a chance to weigh-in on whether the state should have accepted federal Medicaid funding for BadgerCare.

That’s following the Wood County Board’s decision this week that the issue can appear on this November’s ballot as a referendum, but state lawmaker Bob Kulp says having the issue go to referendum isn’t a good idea unless voters are informed of all the facts.

According to Kulp, “(To put out a referendum) without giving the education that people need to answer that referendum question intelligently is, in my way of thinking, really a political move, and that’s unfortunate.” Kulp added that voters should know that, if accepted, the federal Medicaid money would represent only one-fourth of one-percent of the state’s annual budget, and that accepting the federal money would have significant health care strings attached.

Kulp represents Wisconsin’s 69th Assembly District.
