Gerard Way had a lofty goal when he was recording his solo debut, Hesitant Alien . The former My Chemical Romance frontman tells Rolling Stone , “The main objective was to change the landscape of music a bit. To kind of re-boot Britpop in America.”

Of the 1990s genre that informed his album, Way remembers, “It was a real exciting time. It was like the alternative to grunge and it was so refreshing… It was a feeling that British music was being liberated, and I loved it.” He adds that toward the end of their run, MCR was getting a bit too American for him and that it was time for the band to call it quits.

Discussing some of Hesitant Alien ’s 11 tracks, Way says, “[The opening song] ‘Bureau’ was influenced by stuff like [ David ] Bowie ’s Station to Station .… ‘Zero Zero’ kind of started as this Blur ‘Song 2’ thing, kind of fuzzed out, but we always heard Joy Division in it so it ended up going in that direction.”  Even the title of his new album reflects Way’s sense of being an alien among his American musical peers. “I remember being on TRL ,” he says. “I felt like I’d come to Earth for the first time and I was on this crazy TV show that made no sense to me.”

Hesitant Alien is available for pre-order now at Way’s website . The album officially touches down on Earth on September 30.
