Man accused of skinning dog not in court Thursday

by

NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Clark County man charged with trying to skin his dog alive was not in court Thursday as planned.

65-year-old Charles Weissmiller is charged with mistreatment of animals with intent to cause death for an incident that happened on May 15th. Weissmiller was supposed to appear in Clark County Circuit Court Thursday for an arraignment hearing, but that hearing was delayed because Weissmiller is hospitalized. Officials have not said why he is in the hospital.

A scheduling conference with the attorneys and Judge Jon Counsell will take place August 28th at 3:30 p.m., where they will get an update on Weissmiller’s condition and try to reset the hearing date.

Investigators say Weissmiller had cut himself at his home near Owen trying to skin the dog because he didn’t want it any longer.

The dog named Sammy is a labrador-shepherd mix. Sammy was taken to a veterinarian by a Withee police officer. The dog is recovering from the injuries, and has had many surgeries to repair the wounds.
