Walker urges propane customers to fill up now & apply for WHEAP assistance early

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- State officials including the Governor are urging people to get ready for winter propane use now.

Last winter’s propane shortage was caused by the combination of several factors. First, propane supplies were used early in the fall to dry grains due to the wet harvest. Second, producers were exporting propane and much of the fuel was being shipped away from the midwest. Third, many Wisconsin propane customers did not expect problems getting refills, and didn’t top off their tanks in the summer when propane is cheaper and more plentiful.

Governor Scott Walker Friday issued a statement urging people that need help with propane costs to apply now for the Wisconsin Heating and Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) so the tanks can get filled sooner and at a lower cost. Walker says similar factors could create another propane shortage this winter, even though efforts are being made to get more propane into local distributor’s storage facilities to avert the problem. The Governor says applying now instead of October allows propane customers to take advantage of summer prices, which gets them ready for winter and also stretches the WHEAP funds to help more families.
