WESTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Marathon County health and highway officials rolled out a series of new self-service bicycle repair stations across the Wausau Metro on Wednesday.
They're called Fixtations and Marathon County health educator Aaron Ruff says the stands offer basic repair kits for riders. "The bike repair stand comes with eight different tools, ranging from allen key wrenches to tire levers to take off the tire when you want to change a tire, to screwdrivers, wrenches, that sort of thing. They're going to have a high security bike pump, so it's a hand pump to pump up bike tires, stroller tires."
The locations are set as part of the county's overall bike program and placed at locations where people frequently ride their bikes. "Really we looked at high traffic places for this first round of Bike Fixtations. And each of the four locations plus the Glass Hat are all very very highly traveled bicycle and pedestrian locations."
Ruff says the locations are at the Mountain Bay Trail in Weston, at River Park in Rothschild near the Bike-Pedestrian bridge to Rib Mountain, the Glass Hat in Wausau, the Aspirus YMCA in Weston, and at Nine Mile Recreation Area in Rib Mountain.
The stations were paid for through grants from the Community Foundation of Northcentral Wisconsin as well as the Aspirus Health Foundation.
Ruff says his department and the county's bike and ped committee are hoping the new stations will help encourage people to get out and use their bikes and help foster more growth for the Wausau Metro as a bike-friendly community.
