High school students compete in mock trials Saturday

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WXPR) -- Rhinelander high school's Mock Trial team begins a quest for another regional title Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.

The team has won the national title once and has won 16 state titles, including last year.

Mock Trial gives students a chance to argue realistic cases in a courtroom-like setting from a predetermined set of circumstances.

Long time Rhinelander coach Kathy Vick-Martini says many of their championship team graduated. "We have a young team this year, relatively inexperienced, just two people back from last year's state championship team and we're going to be facing some pretty tough competition but we're hoping to be able to continue our winning streak of 28 consecutive regional championships."

She says the case the teams will argue concerns possible negligence. "Two high school students, one was crossing the street and the other struck him with her car. On both sides of the case there's an expert claiming the other party was negligent. There's an eyewitness on each side of the case giving facts favorable to their side."

Other schools participating in the mock trials include Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, Merrill, Marshfield, Phillips, Stratford and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.

The other Rhinelander coaches include Judge Michael Bloom and attorney Jim Jacobi.
