RHINELANDER, Wis. (WXPR) -- A drag racing event on ice that began last year has been cancelled this year due to safety concerns.
The Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce's HoDrags On Ice event was originally planned for February 22. Tourism and Event Coordinator Kate Bauman says they checked Lake Thompson, and ice conditions were not suitable for this type of event. She says they measured 26 inches of cover, but six inches of that was slush. "When one (person) was parked out there for about an hour there was a layer of slush underneath his vehicle so if you multiply that by any means there was no way we were going to risk the public safety at all."
The event features drag racing of all types on the ice. It was a surprise hit last year with a large crowd.
Bauman says while this year's event is cancelled, it will be held at an undetermined location in 2015.
