MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- A brand new recycling program is up and running in Marshfield. That’s according to utilities manager Bob Trussoni who says homeowners now have a way to safely dispose of items including those new mercury vapor lights bulbs.

Trussoni says, “We’re trying to encourage people to bring in the CFL, the compact fluorescent light bulbs, and then also batteries. We do the 4-foot and the 8-foot fluorescent tubes as well, and this is just for residential.” The batteries that can be recycled free of charge are “the smaller ones like AA, AAA, C, D, and 9-volt,” but not larger batteries like car batteries. Most automotive and fleet suppliers can recycle car and machinery batteries.

The new light bulbs can be somewhat hazardous to the environment and possibly to humans if not disposed of properly since they do contain mercury.

The program is free for residential customers, and drop-off points are at Hillers Ace Hardware, and Riegel Plumbing and Hardware in Marshfield.

For full information you can checkout the Marshfield Utilities website at their website.
