Stevens Point & Plover municipal court a step closer

by

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Stevens Point and Plover are a step closer to starting their own municipal court. The topic has been discussed often in the past several months, and Steven’s Point waited to act until city council members had their questions answered.

The Public Protection Committee approved the ordinance creating the municipal court Monday night. The Village of Plover has approved the identical ordinance.

Mayor Andrew Halverson agrees with Police Chief Kevin Ruder that having a municipal court is long overdue. “It’s a big step for the city. In my opinion, this is something we should have done a long, long time ago, and it’s uniquely special for us to do it with our partners to the south , the Village of Plover, and do it as a joint municipal court.”

Along with reducing caseload at the county courts, the municipal court will be able to offer more flexible times and save citizens money while increasing forfeiture revenue to the two municipalities. “It will allow for our citizens to have tremendously better access to justice, to be able to feel as if they are heard more directly for what are in some instances fairly small concerns with ordinance violations, and it will also help us with a great deal of revenue that will come back to the city, which will certainly increase.”

Halverson expects the municipal court ordinance to get final approval before the full city council next Monday.
