Superintendent Evers critical of proposed Common Core legislation

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The battle over Common Core Standards in Wisconsin Schools continues. The Legislature wants more involvement in what educational standards should be. State Superintendent Tony Evers believes the proposal is a huge mistake.

Superintendent Tony Evers released a YouTube video Wednesday as a “call to action.” Evers says politicizing the standards is the wrong thing to do. “The bottom line is, the recommendations that will come out of this so-called commission that is being proposed will be, not the Common Core State Standards. It will end up in the Legislature, and we will have Legislators writing standards for our kids.”

Many Legislators want education standards to be reviewed every six years, and have proposed a 15-member committee to guide educational standards. If passed, the committee would include the Governor, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, six people appointed by the Governor, five people appointed by the Superintendent, and the majority and minority leaders of the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate.

Evers says schools have done a fine job of implementing high standards in mathematics and English language arts over the past few years, and the proposed legislation would undo that progress. “The last thing we need to do is send a message to the State of Wisconsin and frankly, across the nation, that Wisconsin is stepping backwards. We’re going to be a national embarrassment for what we’re doing in public education.” Assembly Bill 617 is sponsored by Republican Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt, who is on the Assembly Committee on Education. He believes moving away from Common Core and forming this committee is a much more open process.

Wausau Democratic Representative and former teacher Mandy Wright believes the bill goes too far and politicizes education standards.

The Assembly Committee on Education is scheduled to vote on the proposal Thursday.
