Marshfield adjusts signals near railroad tracks

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- The large number of train accidents involving cars and pedestrians in Marshfield has prompted the city to change the signal timing at crossings.

Even before Tuesday’s fatal accident involving a pedestrian, Marshfield officials were working with state transportation officials and the Canadian National Railway to try resolving safety issues at the city’s grade crossings.

Traffic signals on Veteran’s Parkway were adjusted February 14th to hold the green lights for southbound drivers up to 65 seconds while northbounders are already stopped to make sure vehicles and pedestrians can clear the intersections that are a few feet from the railroad crossings.

Marshfield has had several train-vehicle collisions already this year. If problems continue, they may be forced to give up their “no train horn” status.
