Tom Morello has released four albums as his folk-rock alter-ego, The Nightwatchman , but now the Rage Against the Machine guitarist has revealed he’ll soon be hitting the studio to record his first solo rock album.
"I want to make the craziest guitar record that anyone's ever heard," he tells Billboard . "The idea is that this is the [Jimi] Hendrix of now."
Morello says the idea to make the album was inspired by a recent performance with Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band . "The first time I ever sang with an electric guitar in my hands was 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' [with Springsteen] at the Anaheim Pond in 2008,” he explains. “Until then I'd kept my folk singing career and my electric guitar shredding career completely separate. It was on that [Anaheim] stage that I realized there might be a way to combine all the things I do as a songwriter and a guitar player, and this record is going to be that."
The guitarist, who filled in for E Street’s Stevie Van Zandt on Springsteen's Australian tour last year, will play another round of dates with the Boss until March 2, which is when he expects to begin recording the album.
