Independence Day observance at The Highground

NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (WSAU) -- The “true meaning” of Independence Day is the focus of this year’s Fourth of July celebration at The Highground Veterans Memorial Park near Neillsville. Event coordinator Teresa Hebert says the day starts at 10 a.m., and features several speakers including decorated World War II veteran John Charles George. According to Hebert, He was a member of the 101st First Airborne. He was in many important notable conflicts in Europe including the Battle of the Bulge.” Also scheduled to speak is VFW Post 305 Commander Garth Johnson from Eau Claire, who served in Operation Desert Storm and now writes about issues that affect veterans.Available for viewing will be the “Big Map of the Vietnam War,” a 16ft. by 28ft. map of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia containing some very emotional personalized messages from veterans and their families. The Highground is located just west of Neillsville on Highway 10.
