Sexual assault suspect in court

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) --

A man accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old Wausau girl was in court Friday. 38-year-old Praveen Kharb made an initial appearance before Judge Greg Huber for first-degree sexual assault of a child and using a computer to facilitate a sex crime.

Marathon County detectives tracked down Kharb by locating his computer’s IP address in a hotel room near Seattle.

Kharb is accused of making friends with the Wausau 7th grader by social media over the course of several months. He then travelled to Wausau, where he allegedly assaulted the child in her home March 22nd.

The teen agreed to meet Kharb to “hang out” but the child told police that Kharb approached her to have sex, and she was afraid of being hurt if she said no.

Kharb remains jailed, unable to pay a $750,000 cash bond. He’ll be back in court for a pretrial conference July 8th.

The suspect is a citizen of India working in the U.S.
