MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- Another major railroad crossing along Veterans Parkway in Marshfield has been closed, but this time it’s not due to a train collision.
City engineer Tom Turchi says the traffic light at the intersection of Vine Avenue and Veterans Parkway was hit by a drunk driver at around 3:00 Sunday morning.
Damage included the railroad and emergency vehicle preemption systems, which means a complete closure of that crossing. Turchi says, “Because we do not have pre-emption, we have closed the crossing of the tracks at that location.”
As of Monday afternoon, a temporary four-way stop was in place at the intersection, but Turchi says, “We’re working to get the traffic signals bagged so that we can remove the ‘stop condition’ on Veterans Parkway, and just have Vine Avenue stopping.”
Vehicles wanting to cross the railroad tracks will now need to use either the Central Avenue or the just reopened Maple Avenue crossing, and Turchi says it could be several weeks before all repairs are completed.
