Jail attacker found guilty

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) --

The man caught on surveillance video assaulting two Marathon County corrections officers in the jail has been found guilty. 21-year-old Fredrick Morris entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to one count of aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm and two additional charges of battery by a prisoner.

The attack happened March 27th, 2013 when Morris failed to cooperate with jailers, and punched corrections officers Julie Christiansen and Denny Woodward. Christiansen spent months in the hospital, and was unable to return to any level of work until this past February.

Sentencing for Morris is set for 1:30 p.m. September 19th before Judge Michael Moran. Assistant District Attorney Lance Leonhard is seeking a prison term of twenty years.

The plea agreement means no trial, and no trial means officers Christiansen and Woodward will not have to testify.

The attacks occurred in the Marathon County Jail at the end of former Sheriff Randy Hoenisch’s tenure. After this incident, the former Jail Administrator resigned. Marathon County and new Sheriff Scott Parks worked with a jail study committee to improve the conditions inside the jail for officers and inmates, as well as take measures to improve security and safety.
