PHILLIPS, Wis (WSAU) The police chief in Phillips is denying any wrongdoing after being placed on administrative leave. David Sonntag's lawyer issued a statement yesterday saying a complaint filed by the mayor came because the two men do not get along. Sonntag will be paid while the town's police and fire committee investigates.
Among the allegations: that Sonntag falsified a police report about testing evidence after a drug raid. Sonntag is also accused of submitting a mileage reimbursement report for a meeting he did not attend in Madison. And he's accused of pulling a driver over in personal vehicle, which isn't cleared for police use.
Sonntag has been chief for nine years. His assistant will run the department until the next hearing in the case in May.
