WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) A Merrill teenager who lied about having cancer is under arrest. Collections were taken up for 19-year-old Celina Winchell at several Wausau-area businesses. She claimed she had stage-four lung cancer from smoking.
A friend who worked at Sam's Pizza put out a collection jar. Winchell was supposed to open a bank account and deposit the money, but instead was spending it. WSAW-TV profiled the story. One of their viewers knit a cap for Celina. The owners at Sam’s became suspicious and went to police.
Winchell was charged with obstructing an officer. Prosecutors are reviewing the case, and other charges are likely.
She's due in court on Thursday.
