Marshfield votes for temporary Maple Avenue railroad crossing closure

Maple Avenue Railroad Crossing in Marshfield, WI

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- Marshfield’s Board of Public Works has reversed an earlier decision, and has now voted to temporarily close the controversial Maple Avenue railroad crossing for more study on resulting traffic patterns.

The Maple Avenue crossing has been the site of numerous train and vehicle collisions, including three this past winter.

The trial closure would be for three weeks instead of for two months as originally discussed, and Mayor Chris Meyer says the data collected during the temporary closing could help stop a permanent closure of the crossing.

Alderman Tom Buttke said the shortened temporary closure is a good compromise with the Railroad Commissioner’s office, who has the power to close the crossing whether the city agrees or not.

The exact date for the trial closure has yet to be determined, and the issue still needs to go before the Common Council for final approval.
