Jury now deliberating Baumann OWI homicide case

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) -- Jurors are finished deliberating for the day in the OWI homicide trial against Ashley Baumann.

In closing arguments on Monday, defense attorney Wright Laufenberg stated that the state and investigators did a poor job in the investigation, and made up their minds right away at the scene of the crash about Baumann's guilt as being the driver of the crash. He stated that investigators failed to properly investigate parts of the scene including marks and stains on the car, discrepancies in the memory of Jerrica Woller, and her actions the night of the crash.

Special prosecutor Tara Jenswold laid out the facts and evidence presented in the case, and rebutted the defense statements saying that Laufenberg's objections to the evidence were red herrings full of speculation. She said the state had met the burden of proof against Baumann and that attempts to deflect blame on other people were just distraction.

Baumann is accused of crashing her car at full throttle and barrel-rolling the vehicle at nearly 100 miles per hour on June 7th, 2012. Passengers Misty Glisch and Jessica Hartwig died in the crash. Defense attorney Wright Laufenberg claims Hartwig’s sister, and the only other survivor Jerrica Woller was really driving the car.

Cellphone photos from before the crash show Baumann in the driver’s seat, and experts testified hair found on the driver’s side was Baumann’s and not Woller’s.

Jurors will return to deliberations Tuesday morning.
