Closed meeting to discuss unresolved Wausau issues

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau City Council members met in closed session as the Committee of the Whole after the regular council meeting.

Council President Romey Wagner says the special closed Committee of the Whole meeting was to get updates on several ongoing investigations.  “On what’s going on with the bird issues or Highway 52 issues, what’s going on with harassment suit that was filed and things, you know. Yes, they’re ongoing investigations, but we need to get an update once a week or once every other week on that, and as Council President, I called for those and that’s what we’re going to discuss. There’s no action going to be taken, but we’re going to find out where we sit on those.”

Council member Keene Winters went into the meeting believing there may be more discussed, as there are questions about some of Mayor Jim Tipple’s recent phone records and his Florida vacation.  “We’ll be getting advice from our attorney on what our role is in exploring potential ethics violations.”

Mayor Tipple wasn’t certain what topics would be discussed in that closed session, but says his recent actions are legal and legitimate.  “Absolutely, and it was from the start, and that will continue to be that way. I think as more information becomes available, I think people will see that the facts come out, and the truth come out.”

Tipple responded to the criticism by saying he calls several developers with his city issued phone, and that his vacation details were paid by him and really not the city’s business. Some details have come out about the trip since then.  “An editorial is online today, explaining what happened, and there will be more information upcoming.”

The Committee of the Whole meeting was for discussion only, and no formal action was taken.
