Democratic gubernatorial candidate Burke votes to negotiate union contract

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Democrats' main candidate for governor is on record in favor of letting Madison school teachers negotiate another one-year union contract.

The Madison School Board -- of which Mary Burke is a member -- voted unanimously Thursday night to let Madison Teachers Incorporated keep bargaining.

The state GOP immediately slammed Burke's school board action, calling it a "payoff to the unions" for supporting her, and preventing taxpayers from "saving money with Governor Walker's reforms."

For now at least, the Madison School Board did not act illegally. That's because Dane County Circuit Judge Juan Colas ruled that the Act 10 collective bargaining limits don't apply to the Madison teachers -- and Colas later clarified his ruling to make it clear that only state government employees are covered under Act 10.

The state has asked the Supreme Court to make it apply to all local government and school unions except law enforcement and transit workers. That was the Republicans' original intent. We're still awaiting the justices' ruling.
