Coming off a physical afternoon against a second straight division opponent and looking ahead to a pair of home games in four days, Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur opened his practice week for the Denver Broncos with "a mental day."
The team did conduct a walk through but LaFleur admitted they were a little banged up from Sunday's victory against the Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles loom next Thursday at Lambeau.
The day ended with an interesting move as General Manager Brian Gutekunst traded wide receiver and kick returner Trevor Davis to the Oakland Raiders, reportedly for a sixth round draft choice next year. Davis missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury but finally got on the field for the Pre-Season game in Winnipeg, Canada, against the Raiders interestingly enough.
He must have caught the eye of Oakland's new GM Mike Mayock after catching five passes for 78 yards and a touchdown that night, while taking an end around for 18 yards and returning one punt for 17 more.
The Raiders lost their return man, Dwayne Harris to an ankle injury last Sunday and pulled the trigger on Davis.
The former sixth round pick out of Cal in 2016 never was able to crack the wide receiver rotation in Green Bay. In 31 career games he had just 9 receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown. Davis did however, make an impact on special teams as both a better than average return man. His career punt return average is better than 12 yards a return and he was also a willing cover man. His departure leaves the offense with six wide receivers and as for the punt and kickoff return jobs, Davis' successor might have arrived in Green Bay on Tuesday.
When safety Raven Greene went on injured reserve, the Packers claimed defensive back Tremon Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. Last year, Smith finished fourth in the league by averaging 26.8 yards on kickoff returns.
Rookie free agent Darrius Shepherd may also be a candidate, He showed promise in camp but he has been inactive the first two games while getting past a pulled hamstring.
