Serj Tanian does a Reddit AMA, and internet-tough-talks against a new System of a Down album

Seems like rock stars have figured out the source of the internet, Reddit. So recently there have been A LOT of rock-based AMAs, hell, even I did one a few weeks ago. But this story isn't about the Trent Reznor AMA, or my own, it's about "former" System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian's.

This week Serj jumped behind a keyboard in this AMA and the FIRST question responed to was

"Is it true that there's a new System of a Down record in the making?"

To which Serj quickly, and a little internet-tough-guyish, responded

"No, that is not true. A quick scan of press online will show that we have not yet agreed on a timetable for another record due to its time commitments."

Now there were MANY other questions and answers, but this is the one that is sticking in a lot of people's craw. Mostly because this week, SOAD played ONE show in LA at the Hollywood Bowl, where after the show drummer John Dolmayan shouted to the crowd:

"Next time we come back here we'll have a new F**king album!"

Also there was that little Facebook post from bassist Shavo Odadjian earlier this year (which has since been deleted) that blasted Serj saying

"It's Serj who doesn't want to do a new album!!! So please stop harassing us about it!!! We are just waiting for Serj! Now he might hate me for exposing the truth, but I had to..."

So with all of this info, what the hell is right, and what is wrong? I can't tell you for sure, but I can give you my hypothesis:

I think Serj is scared. After the lack of solo success, and the "lack of enthusiasm" for Scars on Broadway, I think he's afraid that a new System of a Down album would never live up to the hype and standards that they've built. The longer they go without a new album, the more the "legend" builds. They have left it on such a high note, that they run a big risk of putting out a mediocre album, and becoming just-another-band. I'm pretty confident in saying that.

Now why do I think this? Because you have multiple members of the band moving in one direction, and Serj being the only other guy to say "NO". Serj is clearly the hold-up, but he's still making music, so the passion is still there. He's still doing shows, so it's not a touring thing.

Again, I can't be 100% certain about WHY there's not a new SOAD album on the way, the only thing I can be 100% certain about, is that we WANT a new SOAD album.
