Road weary Pack

Vikes deposit Packers at US Bank

Every week, we're waiting to see if and when the Green Bay Packers are going to show up for an entire game.

The wait may have to wait until next year.

The Minnesota Vikings all but crippled Green Bay's playoff hopes with a familiar looking roadshow, a 24-17 final before 66,872 Skol clapping fans, a record for this three-year-old venue.

The loss drops Green Bay to 4-6-1 and an unbelievable 0-6 on the road.

Just like the off-key tour stops in L.A., Foxborough, Seattle and now Minneapolis, the Packers were ready to compete early but the longer the game went on, the faster they faded into oblivion.

Davante Adams drew a 36-yard pass interference penalty on Xavier Rhodes on the game's fourth series and he finished off the march by schooling the Pro Bowl corner on a 15 yard back shoulder touchdown catch that gave Green Bay the early lead.

Minnesota answered quickly, driving 75 yards in six plays with Dalvin Cook catching a flare route and weaving through missed tackles for a 26-yard touchdown.

Right back came the Pack with Equanimeous St. Brown hauling in a 23-yard catch which led to Aaron Jones taking a quick pitch around the left end and scoring untouched from 6 yards out.

The Packers were up 14-7 but couldn't enjoy the momentum.  Kirk Cousins found Stefon Diggs behind a fallen Tramon Williams for a wide open 30-yard touchdown making it four scores on consecutive possessions.

Minnesota had two chances to grab the halftime lead but Dan Bailey missed wide left from 48 yards and then made a 51 yarder with seconds left in the quarter, only to get pushed back five yards on a false start penalty.  The 56-yard boot was pushed wide right and the score was tied at 14 at the break.

The Packers offensive line then fell apart on the opening series of the third quarter when Byron Bell lost a shoe and was replaced by Justin McCray at guard.   Three plays later, Bell returned but McCray moved to the other guard spot when Lane Taylor's night was finished with a knee injury after colliding with Bryan Bulaga.

The momentum swung when Mike McCarthy decided to go for it on 4th and 1 from his own 44 but Aaron Jones was brought down by Harrison Smith for no gain.

The Vikes traveled only 25 yards but Bailey's 37-yard field goal put them on top for good at 17-14.

Another three and out followed when David Bakhtiari had to leave with a knee injury and Sheldon Richardson sacked Rodgers to force a punt.

Minnesota got a big return from Marcus Sherels and needed only 4 plays to cover 31 yards to make it 10 point game when Adam Thielen scampered in from 14 yards out, the third TD toss for Cousins who would finish with 342 yards and a passer rating of 129.5 against a secondary that was without Kevin King, Bashaud Breeland and Raven Greene, all inactive.

Kentrell Brice would leave the game twice, reinjuring his ankle, returning and then knocked out for good with a concussion.

The Vikes had a chance to put the game away when Williams called for a fair catch but let the ball bounce and it glanced off his helmet allowing Minnesota to recover at the 15.

Reggie Gilbert deflected a 4th down pass and the Packers took over at their 7 with 4:51 to play.

Rodgers found Jimmy Graham, playing with a broken thumb, on consecutive passes covering 25 and 9 yards and Green Bay reached the Viking 20.

But on second and one, Rodgers skipped a pass to the flat for St. Brown and then missed an open Adams in the end zone.

The Packers settled for Mason Crosby's 38-yard field goal to make it one score game but Crosby's ensuing onside kick was recovered by Kyle Rudolph and Minnesota ran out the clock.

A different city but the same story for the Pack's Head Coach now staring at a 4-6-1 record.

McCarthy's offense just can't sustain a proficient level of execution, managing just 245 yards, converting only 2 of 10 third-down snaps and holding the ball for only 25:23.

Jones rushed a season-high 17 times for 72 yards and caught three passes for 21 more.   Adams had a team-high five receptions for 69 yards, eclipsing the 1000 yard mark for the first time in his career.

Rodgers was 17 of 28 for 198 (a 94.0 rating) but he was sacked four times by a Minnesota front that got far more aggressive in the second half.

Thielen and Diggs tormented the thinned out secondary to the tune of 8 catches each.  Thielen gained 125 yards while Diggs had 77.

Minnesota piled up 416 yards against a defense that started without Mike Daniels, Nick Perry and the three defensive backs.

Randall Cobb was inactive for the sixth time this year with his pulled hamstring.

The Packers now stand 10th in the NFC playoff picture as Minnesota (6-4-1) and Washington (6-5) hold the wild card spots with Seattle, Carolina, and Philadelphia all ahead of Green Bay.

Depending on who you believe, one service said the Packers have a 15% chance of still making the post-season, another had it down to 3% after yet another agonizing road show.

As Rodgers put it, we have to win 'em all and get some help.

It's now evident, the 2018 Green Bay Packers need a whole lot of help.
