My wife and I had a very enjoyable evening last night at the Grand Theater. The Tent Radio Show was in town. The Blue Canvas Orchestra, the house band for the Big Top Chatuaqua in Bayfield travels around the state in the off-season doing shows and recording them for their nationally syndicated show on NPR. Not only was the band in town but the host of the show is Michael Perry. Think of him as a younger version of Garrison Keillor with mud on his boots. I havent read any of Perry's books but I will now. He's a funny guy and his stories of growing up on a farm in small-town Wisconsin and how he became a writer kept the crowd laughing and nodding knowingly. He put himself through nursing school while working as a cowboy in Wyoming. He raise pigs on a farm near New Auburn in Chippewa County and also is a New York Times best selling author. Plus he writes songs for his band The Long Beds. Hard to pigeon-hole this guy. And the band was great as usual. They did a wide selection tunes from some of their original Big Top shows including historical tunes written about the Bayfield/Lake Superior area with antique slides showing the area at the time . I know I've told you before that this 965 seat tent at the base of Mt. Ashwabay is a great place to see a summer show so all I can say is I hope you make the trip soon. We're going to see Bonnie Raitt in early July .
The Brewers win another series, taking 2 of three from the Pirates. Khris Davis and Rickie Weeks got the big hits. Milwaukee hits the road for 10 days starting tonight in Chicago.
It's been awhile since the East baseball team has swept the season series from the Wausau West Warriors but they did it Thursday night with a 4-2 win. They also won the Carp Cup for the first time. The Cup is a traveling trophy named after Ron Carpenter, a long-time youth baseball coach in the Wausau area and a member of the Central Wisconsin Baseball hall-Of-Fame.
The Lumberjacks travel to DC Everest today. Chris Conley will have the call at 4:45 on Foxsports radio AM1390 & FM 93.9..
I'm heading to the Northwoods for the weekend for a get-away with some old high school friends. This is the second annual get-together which started last year as a healing exercise for one of our number who lost her son. We had such a good time hiking, kayaking and just hanging out that we decided to do it again. It will be good to de-compress a little bit even if the weather isnt really cooperating.
