Wilson's Baseball Dream is Just That

by Tom King

Russell Wilson spent the weekend moonlighting. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback was at spring training camp with the Texas Rangers. He took grounders and worked with ranger manager Ron Washington on footwork. Wilson had been an infielder in the Colorado Rockie minor league organization before giving up the game when he transferred to Wisconsin for his final college football season. As we know he parlayed that into an NFL career that has blossomed early. Washington and some of the other Ranger coaches say that with alot of work and repetition he might be able to make it as a baseball player but lets not kid ourselves. As much as Wilson might love baseball and might like to become a two-sport athlete ala Deion Sanders, there is no chance of that happening. Some scouts including noted baseball scout and analyst Keith Law of ESPN say that Wilson was never really a major league prospect when he played before. His bat just wasnt strong enough to merit much consideration. Playing quarterback in the NFL is hard...hitting a baseball consistently at the major league level is harder.

The Rangers picked him in a draft with a late round pick to come to spring training and talk to their young players about what it takes to win and what it takes to be a pro...if he gets a rush by getting back on the baseball field for awhile, good for him. But lets not make this something it's not.
