New changes for the 2012 gun deer season

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WSAU) - As hunters get ready to get into their deer stands this weekend for the 9 day gun deer season, DNR officials say there's been some big changes to the way the hunt is run that people should be aware of.

DNR spokesman Ed Culhane says the first major change is that hunters are allowed to use any of the legal methods to take deer during the gun hunt, including archery and crossbows. "They can apply that gun tag on a deer taken with any of those methods."

He says this will allow felons to take part in the gun hunt this year as well, provided they use a bow or crossbow. "We're just reminding them that on their way out to the stands, they shouldn't be in arms reach of a firearm or other weapon.

Major changes include crossbow hunting, the addition of trail cameras on public lands, wolf hunt continues while deer hunting is taking place, no earn a buck, more is available online at the DNR's website or in this year's deer hunting regulations pamphlet

Those hunters carrying archery tags will still be allowed to hunt during the deer season as well. Those with only an archery tag must only use a bow and arrow to hunt their deer.

Hunters who are out in the woods looking to fill their wolf tags will be allowed in the woods during the deer hunt as well. Culhane says they'll have to follow all the rules of the deer hunt. "That means hunting within the deer hunt hours, and wearing proper safety gear."
