Brewers Post-Season Awards

Ryan Braun was named Monday as the Milwaukee Brewers’ Most Valuable Player for the 2012 season. And Yovani Gallardo was named the team’s Most Valuable Pitcher by the Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers Association. Both players were unanimous picks, as they received all 40 possible points from the writers.

Also, third baseman Aramis Ramirez was named the Brewers’ top newcomer. Starter Marco Estrada was named the team’s “unsung hero.” And closer John Axford received the “Good Guy Award” for his dealings with the media. In some ways, Braun exceeded his numbers from a year ago, when he won the National League M-V-P honor. He batted .319 with 41 homers, 112 R-B-I’s, 108 runs scored, and a .986 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Gallardo led the Milwaukee starters in a September Wild Card bid that fell short. He won 8-of-11 starts in that stretch, and finished 16-and-9 with a three-point-six-six E-R-A. And Gallardo extended a team record with his fourth consecutive season with 200-or-more strikeouts.

Ramirez batted .300 this year, his first with Milwaukee after more than a decade with Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs. Ramirez had 50 doubles, 27 homers, and 105 R-B-I’s.

Estrada filled in twice for injured starters during the season, and then heated up in September.

Axford showed so much respect for the media and his fans, that he left a note at his locker with quotes on the night his streak of 49 straight conversions ended in May – right before going to a hospital where his wife was having premature labor pains.
