Wisconsin lawmakers again want answers about flawed Milwaukee ATF operation

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Four federal lawmakers from Wisconsin are again seeking answers about a flawed undercover operation in Milwaukee by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

House crime subcommittee chairman Jim Sensenbrenner of Menomonee Falls is among the lawmakers demanding information by next week from the ATF.

The Journal Sentinel said 4 people were taken into custody six months ago, after one of them stashed away a machine gun stolen from the vehicle of an ATF agent. That gun is still missing, along with another stolen weapon from the operation.

The ATF created a fake storefront to bring in large amounts of illegal guns and drugs, and get their users and suppliers off the streets.

But the Journal Sentinel said the effort was riddled with mistakes. They included a burglary that netted $40,000 in stolen merchandise, and sensitive information left behind when the ATF abandoned the operation.

The ATF says it’s still investigating the matter internally – and until that’s finished, the agency is not commenting.
