Friday house fires cause extensive damage and deaths

House fires kept firefighters busy Friday, including two causing a lot of damage to central Wisconsin homes, and another fire in western Wisconsin that has killed at least two family members.

An early morning house fire in Plover at 3711 Post Road was called in around 2:45 a.m., but by the time firefighters arrived on scene the house was engulfed in flames. Wisconsin Public Service had to turn off the natural gas, which was apparently helping fuel the fire. The one story house was being remodelled, so no one was home at the time. The cause is still under investigation.

Hatley and Birnamwood firefighters were called out to a home in Bevent early Friday morning. Marathon County Sheriff’s officials say a man was lighting a furnace when it exploded. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening burns. Another man was in the home but was not injured.

A mobile home fire in Chippewa County has killed two people, injured five more and left one person missing. Two bodies were recovered from the fire north of Holcombe and the third is presumed to be dead. The five survivors were flown by helicopter to several hospitals. They included four adults and a two year old child. Cornell and Sheldon firefighters responded. A portion of Highway M northeast of Holcombe was shut down to traffic as emergency responders were working on the scene.
