Badger Hockey Update

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Wisconsin Badgers had no problem skating past the Nittany Lions on their home ice Friday. Wisconsin defeated Penn State by a final score of 7-1.

Wisconsin led 2-1 after the first period, with scores by Grant Besse and Frankie Simonelli. The Penn State goal by Tommy Olczyk eleven minutes in was the only time the Nittany Lions would put the puck in the net. The Badgers had goals by Michael Mersch and Tyler Barnes before the second intermission. Barnes flipped one behind him, shooting between his own legs right into the net. He never saw it. Wisconsin scored again in the third period with Nic Kerdiles, Kevin Schulze, and Brad Navin.

Coach Mike Eaves said, “We were not very good early. There were a lot of turnovers, we didn’t handle the puck well.” The coach was glad his players got better as the game went on, making better decisions. Joel Rumpel played in only his fourth game since March, but Eaves said he settled in and made good decisions in the net for the Badgers.

The same two teams face off again Saturday at Kohl Center. The puck drops at 8:00 p.m. CST. Pregame activities start on WSAU Radio 550 AM and 99.9 FM beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Badger womens hockey team got a hat trick from Madison Packer as they whipped Bemidji State at the Labahn Arena in Madison. Wisconsin scored five unanswered goals in the final 39 minutes of the game.

The two teams play again this afternoon
