Ag experts offering financial help to new food producers

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- State ag officials are offering their help in starting up your new agribusiness.

It's a program designed to help small businesses based on food production get off the ground. Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Business coach Carl Rainy says all sorts of businesses qualify for the assistance. "Whether it's cow dairy, sheep dairy, goat dairy, beef products, pork products, it doesn't matter. So long as it's value-added, we're helping them today."

The program is there to help new startups get technical and financial assistance in their starting stages. Rainy says that's always the hardest part for a new company. "We can provide you assistance anywhere from business planning, to developing financial projections, marketing strategies, tools to use, legal entities to form, that's the type of assistance we can provide you."

The program will work to connect potential business customers to people experienced in that field to offer advice. That's important, says Rainy, as a number of trends show local food as an important and needed market. "Our local producers can talk to individual people by name and service their needs specific to their desires. I think there's a terrific business opportunity when you can do that."
