WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- For now, churches and other non-profits won’t be forced to pay fees to have their programming on Wausau’s public access television channels.
The city has proposed a series of policies, procedures, and communication guidelines for the channels the city has through Charter Cable under their franchise agreement.
Churches including St. Paul’s United Church of Christ oppose paying a fee to put their services on the access channel.
City Council members had a short discussion about making content providers pay to put shows on the air, and also how educational programs from many sources are exempt from the city’s proposed fees. There were also comments about potentially taking operation of the public access channels away from the Mayor’s office and letting a board or a non-profit organization operate it instead.
The issue was tabled until the August meeting to allow aldermen to study the options.
