GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) - A central Wisconsin basketball rivalry opened the Girls State Basketball Tournament in Green Bay. Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Wausau Newman have split their season series at a game apiece, but the tiebreaker at the State Semifinals turned into a blowout. Assumption’s Royals defeated the Cardinals 60-37.
The first basket of the game was the only time Newman had the lead. Both teams had 20 turnovers, but Newman had cold shooting with 27% from the floor and only 2 of 13 from three-point range.
Wisconsin Rapids Assumption will face Barneveld for the Division 5 championship Saturday. Those two teams only played two months ago, and Assumption took that game 44-41.
