Madison boy becomes youngest in nation to become "chess master"

by

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A nine-year-old boy from Madison has become the youngest in the nation to reach the official rank of “chess master.”

Awonder Liang earned master status – exceeding 2,200 career points – while competing at a tournament over the weekend in Dayton Ohio.

The U.S. Chess Federation has certified the accomplishments. Awonder, a 4th-grader, is a week younger than a California boy who became the country’s youngest chess master in 2010.

According to the federation, master status points are achieved most quickly by defeating better opponents.

The group says Liang is currently the 10th-best overall chess player in Wisconsin.
