Minn. man accused of killing wife, Wausau native, asks for trial to be delayed

ST. PAUL, MN (WTAQ) - The man charged with killing Wausau area native Kira Steger Trevino has asked that his trial be delayed.

39-year-old Jeffrey Trevino of Saint Paul is scheduled to go on trial May 28th on two Minnesota counts of second-degree murder. But Trevino’s lawyer, John Conard, says the prosecution has not turned over all its evidence – and therefore, he needs more time to plan his defense strategy.

Also, Conard is challenging the state’s request to double the prison time if Trevino’s convicted.

Conard says there’s not enough proof that his client hid his wife’s body and failed to help her after she was injured, which is what the state claims.

30-year-old Kira Trevino is still missing – and she’s presumed dead after dozens of searches.

Prosecutors have asked that a jury hear what Kira told her mother, friends, and co-workers about being unhappy in her marriage, and her apparent plans to leave him.
