Legislature to vote on proposal to forgive taxes for dead soldiers

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin lawmakers will vote Tuesday on a bill to forgive state income taxes for military troops killed in combat.

Both houses are scheduled to take up the measure.

24-year-old Army Lieutenant David Johnson of Mayville was killed 15 months ago while on a foot patrol in Afghanistan. His father Andrew said he was shocked that the state would not forgive his son’s state income taxes, after the federal government forgave what his son owed the IRS.

He brought up the subject with his state lawmakers – and they both agreed to introduce a bill to forgive state taxes for the year in which a soldier or Marine dies, plus the year before.

Assembly Republican Mark Born of Beaver Dam and Senate Republican Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau sponsored the measure, which has received support from both parties.

About 150 U.S. soldiers from Wisconsin have died in combat since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
