STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) - Free Fishing Weekend has a fishing tournament designed just for kids and parents Saturday morning in Stevens Point. It’s called Cops ‘N Bobbers, and is put together by the Portage County Sheriff’s Department and the Stevens Point Elks Lodge No. 641.
Officers from several area police departments join the deputies in helping the families at this event.
Deputy Sheriff Eric Koepsell coordinates the program for kids and parents. He says the idea around Cops and Bobbers is simple. "It's a bonding experience between officers and the kids and parents" adding, "It's just something fun to do."
The program started five years ago, and has grown considerably. "The first year was kind of small and we had about 20 people. It's grown to, last year, total about 115 to 120 people."
Activities are Saturday morning at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point starting at 9:00 a.m. with a short program before fishing begins.
Children 4-13 and their parents are invited to sign up in advance, so the officers and Elks Lodge members can round up poles and bait for those that need equipment. It also helps them plan for lunch after the event and so they can have enough T-shirts to give to the children. There’s still time to sign up today with a call or an email to the Portage County Sheriff’s Department.
Sign up in advance by calling the Portage County Sheriff’s Office at 715-346-1400 or emailing Deputy Eric Koepsell at: firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to provide children’s names, contact information, number of attendees, whether equipment is needed and shirt sizes for children (indicate adult or youth sizes).
