Stevens Point special meeting Monday to vote on pay plan

by

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- The controversial and often contentious Stevens Point employee pay study is expected to have a vote from the City Council Monday night. This is the study the city leaders hired the firm of Carlson-Dettman to conduct and show how the city’s employees compare to similar positions in other Wisconsin cities, both private and public.

After months of discussion, Personnel Committee Chairman Michael O’Meara urged committee members to tell Charlie Carlson everything they need to make a decision at the city council meeting. “Is there anything else you need, any data, so that you can vote and not just kick it down the road, because that’s really unacceptable.” He added, “I think for all of our employees, it’s unfair for us to avoid making a decision because it’s tough.”

The recommendations call for some pay raises for some management level jobs that are considerably below their comparable positions elsewhere.

The proposed raises have come under fire from some council members who say the city’s taxpayers are already hurting and can’t afford these raises. Some of the city’s union workers are also critical of the raises and the projection that several workers would not see raises for several years, if ever.

A vote on the pay plan recommendations will happen during a special meeting of the Stevens Point Common Council at 5:30 p.m. The regular meeting is later at 7:00 p.m.
